THE CRANE BEACH VIEW

Photo compliments the Crane Hotel

Saint Philip is the easternmost Parish (district) of Barbados.  It has the largest land area of the 11 Parishes - a whopping 23 sq miles. St. Philip has the largest area of crop cultivation making it locally considered "the country" and sometimes locally referred to as “St. Far-up” but we ‘Philippians’ don’t mind because we know it’s special here.

Favoured for its tranquility and sense of community, the coastline from Ocean City to Fortescue is truly a breathtaking ‘necklace’ of ocean frontage; made up of cliffs 60-100 ft above sea level and interspersed with idyllic beaches such as Foul Bay, The Crane, Beachy Head, Falmouth, Sharks Hole Lagoon (no sharks here!) Sam Lords, Harrismith, Bottom Bay, Peat Bay and the list goes on.  The coastal areas are bathed in balmy Atlantic Breezes – I was there last week-end and I can tell you there’s a special aura here that’s just – St. Philip!

Places of Interest

  • Sunbury Great House – Restored Plantation Residence furnished with fine antiques and steeped in History
  • Crane Resort – from luxurious hotel suites to private residences for sale and a bonanza of shopping, dining and entertainment options right here. Check out Sophia’s Boutique Ladies!
  • St Philip Anglican Church -originally founded in 1640 and tho’ destroyed by hurricane and fire over the years, it remains an architectural beauty, set amongst magnificent Mahogany Trees and an enormous Silk Cotton Tree circa 1867. Worth a visit.
  • Foursquare Rum Distillery & Heritage Park – so much to learn, see and taste!
  • Rum Shops  - too many to mention – you’ll always be welcome and it’s a fun way to experience authentic Barbadian life and laughs. Catch a round of dominoes or game of drafts.

The Beaches

I know I go on and on about these but they are “the bomb.com” in St Philip – waters are wild and exhilarating yet safe enough for strong swimmers (an Uncle once said “swimming in the Crane Sea is like swimming in fizzy Gin ‘n Tonic – too true).  Head to Sharks Hole Lagoon or the  North end of Sam Lords Beach/Harrowville for sheltered, gentle swims.

Restaurants

  • Zen at The Crane
  • Marco Polo Bar & Grill
  • Cutters Bistro, Deli & Bar
  • Nuff (Bajan for enough=plenty) roadside eateries and Rum Shops that cook up a storm.  Ask any Philippian they’ll tell you where and when.

Getting to and from St. Philip is a dawdle nowadays, with roadways much improved in recent years and the Airport nearby. The shopping hub at Six Roads has pretty well everything you’ll need from hardware to pharmacies, supermarkets to vegetable vendors and good old Chefette Fast Food Rest,  just in case. Oops, nearly forgot Rubis Kirtons a.k.a. Stoute’s has a great local deli section and the nicest staff – always busy, follow the crowd.

Property values are great – in general 5-10% below central Christ Church and further West. You’ll find a wide range of property types to suit every budget,  so come on up to St. Phar-up.
